Help for new parents

There is so much evidence which shows how important the first few years of a child’s life are. Get the first few years right, and people are much better set for the rest of their life. This doesn’t happen by magic and not all parents know how to give their children the best start in life.

Children don’t come with a manual, but there’s enough information out there about what parents can do to help with their child’s development that we could give parents better information about the sorts of things which would help their children become happy and resilient, and to give them a love of learning that would set them in good stead for the rest of their life.

There are apps and websites which will some parents will find out about and use. There are some parents who need much more hands on support though and I’d like to see a commitment in your plan to do more of this.

Why the contribution is important

Helping parents of young children will go a long way to not only meeting your ambition to give children and young people the best start in life, but  also in the long term when these children become adults they will be better placed to live happy, healthy and purposeful lives, and they will need much less support from the state.

Thanks for sharing your idea Dan_K. We agree it's really important that parents and carers get the information and support they need - as you say, different people need different types of support, and this can change at different times in their lives.

We know that the way families use services is changing; many parents and carers go online to
find information about what is happening in their area or to seek advice when they need help. As part of the new Early Childhood and Family Service, Norfolk County Council wants to do more to provide families with access to reliable, high quality and up to date information.

At the same time, the new service is being designed to provide more targeted support to families who need extra help. This will include offering families the opportunity to attend support groups and activities at venues close to where they live in their local community. The new service will also visit families, at home or in their community, who are likely to need extra help to cope with the demands of family life, and will work closely with health, education and other partners. The new service starts in October.
